2020.11.29 22:54 cuntymcfucktrumpet In May 2020, three-year-old Dylan Ehler was playing outside with his grandmother at her home in Truro, NS. She was momentarily distracted by her dog, which had to be put on a leash. When she turned back around to talk to her grandson, he was gone.

In the afternoon of Wednesday 6th May 2020, three-year-old Dylan Ehler was visiting his grandmother at her home near Queen Street and Elizabeth Street in Truro, Nova Scotia. They were playing outside together in the yard and Dylan's grandmother got distracted by her dog — when she finished dealing with it and turned around to talk to her grandson, he was gone.
Emergency services were contacted immediately and investigators began combing the area Dylan vanished from in search of anything that would lead them to the missing toddler. The very same day, they made an important discovery.
Dylan's rubber boots were found in Lepper Brook, a waterway located a mere two-minute walk from his grandmother's home. One was found at 7.20pm and the other was found later in the evening, further down the brook near where it meets Salmon River. Salmon River runs into Cobequid Bay which connects to the Bay of Fundy — known to have the highest tides in the world.
Police quickly shifted their focus towards recovery efforts, examining the Salmon River shoreline and the river itself. Underwater cameras and thermal imaging devices were used and after nothing of value was found in the initial operation, law enforcement expanded their search to include the area near the mouth of Cobequid Bay. They also re-canvassed residents of Dylan's grandmother's neighbourhood.
Although the water was clear and visibility was good, they could find no further sign of Dylan. On 15th May, police announced they would not be continuing the underwater searches unless there were new developments in the case.
Support for the Ehler family came pouring in, locally, provincially, and nationally. Some Truro residents put rubber boots on their doorsteps as a sign of hope that Dylan may still return, with one saying: "I put out a teddy bear and a blanket hoping that he would… just find his way up the road, and I left the light on so he could see my yard is all lit up.”
Then, on 20th May, a local newspaper revealed Dylan's mother (Ashley Brown) had been charged with assaulting Dylan’s father (Jason Ehler) four days before Dylan went missing. On the same day, Jason was charged with "uttering a threat to cause death,” to Ashley. He was also charged with committing mischief for deliberately damaging Ashley's cellphone.
Dave MacNeil, Truro Police Chief, has stated from the very beginning of the investigation he does not believe Dylan fell victim to foul play and that the previous charges are completely unconnected to his case. Speaking in an interview about what may have happened, Dylan's grandfather said:
"He thinks it’s a game. Once he’s out and about, he loves to run. He was outside with his grandmother. Then he was gone."
However, Dylan's parents do not think their son was a victim of a tragic accident. In June 2020, they announced details of a crowdfunded $10,000 reward for Dylan's safe return and $1,000 for information leading to his whereabouts. It's their belief the toddler may have been kidnapped. According to Dylan's father, Jason:
"The boots don’t make sense. The boots have never made sense... people covered that ground as soon as (Dylan’s grandmother) screamed for help. As soon as the grandmother called for help, there was a guy instantly at that brook, and there was nothing. No boots, no boy, no nothing."
Ashley and Jason theorise that Dylan's boots could've ended up in Lepper Brook after being thrown from the small railway bridge that crosses over the waterway — they're concerned police zeroed in on the river too quickly without considering other possible scenarios in the case.
Initially, Ashley and Jason set an expiry date of 15th July on the reward in order to urge people to come forward quickly. However, no credible tips were received by this date and the reward was subsequently increased to $15,000 with no deadline implemented for the receipt of information.
Dylan's parents have conducted many of their own searches in recent months, aided by volunteers from the local community. At the time of Dylan's disappearance, the water was high and moving quickly. The drier summer and fall conditions made the brook easier to navigate, but searchers are yet to find any further trace of Dylan.
Ashley remains hopeful that Dylan is still alive since no other clothing belonging to him — or Dylan himself — has been found.
In an August 2020 interview, she said the family has been taking additional security measures after receiving death threats online. They have also gotten ransom messages demanding cryptocurrency in exchange for their son's safe return, which the police have investigated and determined to be a scam.
In October 2020, an individual made a Facebook post about a possible sighting of Dylan walking down the street with a woman in Bathurst, New Brunswick (a three-and-a-half hour drive from Truro). Local police reviewed video footage, interviewed witnesses, and concluded that “there was no confirmation that the child seen... was actually Dylan.”
Just this month, the reward fund was again increased to $18,207. Police follow up on leads as they receive them. Dylan's family carries out daily searches using a drone and continues to organise volunteer ground searches. His parents say they will keep looking for Dylan until they have answers, with his father commenting:
"Dead or alive, we want him back. We need him back."

2020.11.12 13:03 djstayinschool Twitch DMCA email

Did anybody else get this notification from Twitch? What does it mean for DJs? We out a platform or what?
Below is the whole email.
TL/DR: Stop using recorded music in your streams. Delete your VODs if they include recorded music. (although in all honesty, I didn't read the whole thing carefully).
Today, we published a blog post that addresses creators' questions and concerns about the recent uptick in DMCA takedowns from music rights holders. While this may not affect you directly, it's important that every creator understands what DMCA is, how to ensure your streams don't infringe on the work of others (and what to do if they may), and what changes we're making to help make navigating DMCA (and similar laws) easier for everyone. Our full message is included below.
Creators, we hear you. Your frustration and confusion with recent music-related copyright issues is completely justified. Things can–and should–be better for creators than they have been recently, and this post outlines our next steps to get there. Moving forward, we’ll be more transparent with what’s happening and what tools and resources we’re building to help.
Copyright law and the DMCA are not small or simple topics, so this won’t be a brief post. We’ll do our best to keep the legalese to a minimum, though there’s bound to be technical terms here and there.
DMCA and Twitch
First off, a quick review of what DMCA actually is. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”) is a set of US laws that allows you to create and share content on digital service providers like Twitch. We comply with the DMCA and similar laws worldwide. Part of complying means that when a copyright holder thinks a streamer has used their content without permission, we have a process in place for them to be able to request the content be taken down.
When we receive a DMCA notification, we process the notification in accordance with our DMCA Guidelines. This includes removing the content, sharing the details with the channel owner, and tracking the allegation.
DMCA takedown notifications can affect your ability to stream because we, as part of our efforts to comply with the DMCA and similar global laws, issue and track copyright strikes and ban the accounts of those who repeatedly infringe the copyrights of others.
This policy is important because we respect the rights of all creators, including those who create or record music, as well as the rights of those who own and control copyrights. As a company that is built around a community of people who create content, we take allegations of copyright infringement seriously.
Recent DMCA notifications
How did we get to this moment? Until May of this year, streamers received fewer than 50 music-related DMCA notifications each year on Twitch. Beginning in May, however, representatives for the major record labels started sending thousands of DMCA notifications each week that targeted creators' archives, mostly for snippets of tracks in years-old Clips. We continue to receive large batches of notifications, and we don’t expect that to slow down.
This means two things: 1) if you play recorded music on your stream, you need to stop doing that and 2) if you haven’t already, you should review your historical VODs and Clips that may have music in them and delete any archives that might.
We were as surprised by this sudden avalanche of notifications as many of you were. We also realized that we needed to provide streamers with more educational programs and content management tools to help you deal with this unprecedented number of notifications coming in all at once. So, while we continued to remove content targeted by these notifications as required by the DMCA, we understand VODs and Clips from years ago may not necessarily reflect your current approach to music. Therefore, we also paused the processing of strikes associated with these batched notifications in order to give you the tools, information, and time that you would need to deal with them.
We have analyzed the notifications we received during that period from the end of May through the middle of October. What we found is that more than 99% of the notifications were for tracks that streamers were playing in the background of their stream.
The point of the DMCA is to strike a balance between the interests of rights holders (the major record labels in this case) and creators. Because of this, we were compelled to delete the VODs and Clips that were identified in the notifications. This showed our commitment to upholding our obligations under the DMCA, while affording us the opportunity to sort out the best way to handle issuing strikes in these circumstances. Under these extraordinary circumstances, we recognized creators should have a reasonable chance to understand that content created in the past was being targeted as allegedly infringing and be given an opportunity to change their approach to music use before they got hit with strikes.
This led to the current situation, which is understandably frustrating and worrying for many of you. Given the circumstances, the warning email many of you received didn’t include all the information that you’d typically get in a DMCA notification (normally, when we receive a DMCA notification against your channel, we send you an email that includes information about the allegedly infringed work, who the claimant is, how the claimant can be contacted, and possible penalties under our repeat infringer policy, so that you can make an informed decision about whether to submit a counter notification or seek a retraction). We hear your feedback about how frustratingly little information we provided, and we should have made that warning email a lot more informative and helpful.
Over the last several months, we have done our best to manage this situation on behalf of both rights holders and creators. One of the mistakes we made was not building adequate tools to allow creators to manage their own VOD and Clip libraries. You’re rightly upset that the only option we provided was a mass deletion tool for Clips, and that we only gave you three-days notice to use this tool. We could have developed more sophisticated, user-friendly tools awhile ago. That we didn’t is on us. And we could have provided creators with a longer time period to address their VOD and Clip libraries – that was a miss as well. We’re truly sorry for these mistakes, and we’ll do better.
How to avoid DMCA notifications
One important question we’ve heard from you is: how can I stream safely and confidently on Twitch without having to worry about getting DMCA notifications from music use?
Most importantly, don’t play recorded music in your stream unless you own all rights in the music, or you have the permission of the necessary rights holder(s). Doing this is the best protection for your streams going forward. If you’re unsure whether you own all the rights, it’s pretty likely you don’t. If you want to include recorded music in your stream, use a fully licensed alternative like Soundtrack by Twitch, or other rights cleared music libraries such as Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS.
While we haven’t received more than a handful of DMCA notifications targeting in-game music, if you’re playing games with recorded music in them, we recommend you review their End User License Agreements (that wall of text at the beginning of a game) to see how the terms cover streaming with that music. One way to do this is to search for a game’s official EULA online and then do a ctrl+f (Command+f on Mac) search for words like “stream,” “licensed,” and “music” to point you toward the correct sections. If you’re unsure about the rights, some games allow you to turn off music when streaming, or you can mute the game audio yourself. If neither of those apply, consider turning off VODs and Clips.
For your stream archives (VODs and Clips), right now your only options, if you think they contain unauthorized music, is to either go through them one by one, or, for Clips, use the “delete all” tool we’ve provided. We understand both of these options have downsides, and we’re working to provide you more and better options as soon as possible. These things will take time to get right, and new challenges may appear in the future. Regardless, we’re committing here and now to investing in building better tools and keeping you posted on our progress.
New products and tools
Ever since the influx of DMCA notifications began, we have been working on building new (and improving existing) tools to help creators (such as the Clips mass deletion tool). This work is still happening. Many of these changes won't be visible to the community, but we’re focused on three areas where we heard you need more support from us:
First, you don't have enough control over the recorded content on your channel. We have made improvements to enable you to mass delete Clips, but in addition, we will (1) expand the use of technology to detect copyrighted audio, and (2) give you more granular ways to manage your archive instead of just a “delete all” option.
Second, we’ll make it easier for you to control what audio from your live streams will show up in your recorded content. Soundtrack by Twitch has some of this technology built into it, and we’ll work to make it available for everyone regardless of whether you want to use Soundtrack, for which we’ve cleared all necessary rights, or music from others that provide rights-cleared music.
Third, we need to give you the ability to actually review your allegedly infringing content when you receive a DMCA notification, in addition to the details already provided in our takedown notifications - that is, information about what copyrighted work was allegedly infringed, who the claimant is, and how the claimant can be contacted. We also need to help you more easily file counter notifications if you believe you have the rights to use the content–for example, because you’ve secured a license, believe the use is a fair use, the claimant does not control the rights, or believe you have the right to use the music without permission.
Some of you have asked why we don't have a license covering any and all uses of recorded music. We are actively speaking with the major record labels about potential approaches to additional licenses that would be appropriate for the Twitch service. That said, the current constructs for licenses that the record labels have with other services (which typically take a cut of revenue from creators for payment to record labels) make less sense for Twitch. The vast majority of our creators don’t have recorded music as a part of their streams, and the revenue implications to creators of such a deal are substantial. We’re open-minded to new structures that could work for Twitch’s unique service, but we must be clear that they may take some time to materialize or may never happen at all. In the meantime, we’re focused on building tools to better help you manage VODs and Clips and providing licensed music options like Soundtrack, while we explore all options.
And just so there’s no confusion, to music creators: we pay public performance licenses in order for you to perform music live to your communities. You should also avoid using pre-recorded music, and disable VODs and Clips, unless you have the rights to the music and compositions.
Ways to stay educated
We’ve got work to do, and at the same time, we urge you to keep learning about copyrights. They are important, not only because of the issues we've covered in this post but because they are created every single day by songwriters, recording artists, authors and other creators like you. While you can take helpful steps to manage your existing content, you run the risk of getting a DMCA takedown notification whenever you use someone else's copyrights in your channel without permission.
In order to help with continuing education around this subject, we’ve added in a “Copyright and Your Channel” Creator Camp page and hosted a follow up livestream where we answered community questions live. Moving forward, our goal is to continue to provide more insight and resources to our community. Starting November 18, we’ll host the first of four additional Creator Camp live sessions. Topics will include a DMCA Overview, Musicians on Twitch and DMCA, and Copyright & Managing Your Twitch Content. These sessions will go deep with insights both from internal and third party experts, and we hope they’ll be useful for you. Be sure to follow Creator Camp to ensure you receive notifications when sessions are live. We will plan additional sessions as needed, informed by the response to those sessions and the ongoing needs of the Twitch community.
Transparency going forward
We know there are probably still many questions that we didn’t get to here. We’ve started to compile some we’ve received from the community and have drafted this FAQ. We always appreciate additional feedback, so we have created a UserVoice forum around this topic as well.
Finally, please remember to check your security settings to confirm the email associated with your account is up to date as soon as possible and allow email from [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to ensure you’re receiving relevant communication. We send reminders and notices here periodically and want to ensure you are getting the information. We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation.

2020.11.10 20:32 MacDFR Help: Missing Communities in NL

I've been traveling the province in my spare time for the past 8 years. Recently, I became interested in visiting more of the communities I haven't been to rather than ones I've already been to.
I searched for information on communities in Newfoundland (not so much Labrador, as Newfoundland has been my main destination). I noticed that it is hard to get information on a lot of the local communities and that there is no complete list of communities and many of the lists I found online are out dated and inaccurate.
I contacted NL Tourism who said they don't have that info (a list of communities). They directed me to the government of NL municipalities department who I then contacted and the manager said they don't think they have that info and will look into it. I then contacted the previous tourism minister who claims to have visited every existing and abandoned community in Newfoundland but they did not respond. Not saying they're a bad person or anything for not responding but I thought maybe they would have the info to share with me.
Anyhow, I'm using Google maps and I've created seperate lists of abandoned communities, existing communities, and amalgamated communities for myself and others to use for their own reasons. I verify if the communities exist before adding them on a list by either visiting the communities, searching recent Census, Facebook groups, feedback from locals, town/peninsula websites and NL government website list of municipalities and local service districts and few other resources.
I am uncertain whether these specific communities, exist or are abandoned. I only mark them as existing if they are lived in all year round, not just seasonally.
If you are absolutely certain about these communities, please let me know if they exist or not. Please include any information on any of this.
Turks Cove
Sprucy Cove
Southern Arm
Little Pumbly Cove
Barasway de Plate
Sandy Harbour
John's Beach
Halfway Point
You can take a look at the map I'm working on here:
Eventually, I would like to write these communities out as an alphabetical list and add the official number to be shared.

2020.10.30 10:56 Fuck_the_RIAA How to anonymously host the continued development of youtube-dl offshore

Original sources of this guide (might be more up to date in case you're viewing a mirror of it):
In this guide I will go through how to anonymously host the continued development of youtube-dl offshore using companies that have a track record of being very resilient to DMCA takedowns. As a general disclaimer, youtube-dl is not illegal, no matter how much the RIAA wants it to be. Hosting it is not illegal, but the RIAA doesn't care about what's legal, so we'll have to act accordingly and not rely on companies that will bend over backwards for them. This post is basically my way of flipping the bird to the RIAA.

Former bulletproof hosting reseller reviews offshore hosting providers
Former bulletproof hosting reseller on what the most warez friendly hosting providers are
(Novogara aka Ecatel recently got busted for tax evasion and are shady as hell in general, allowing anything to be hosted on their servers, so its best to stay away from them.)
Take into account what data center the hosting provider uses. If they don't run their their own data center the company running the data center can shut down the server if the data center isn't DMCA ignored. That isn't to say that resellers can't be resilient, but it depends on how resilient the data center they use is.
Some countries like Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Korea force hosting providers to use government SSL certificates, meaning that they can MITM the connection.
If anyone here is serious about hosting the continuation of the youtube-dl project, PM me (F_the_RIAA_2 on Reddit, FuckTheRIAA on Raddle) and I'll give you a more specific recommendation. Keeping the hosting provider secret makes it a lot harder to take down.
CDNs and proxies to hide the real hosting provider
DDoS-Guard - Highly recommended. Based in Russia. Doesn't care about DMCA at all. Currently provides protection for Nyaa (the world's largest public torrent tracker for anime and manga) and Sci-Hub (the world's largest piracy website for academic papers which is under constant legal pressure from big US publishers). Has a free plan and accepts Bitcoin for paid plans. DDoS-Guard might be inaccessible outside of Europe for a few hours/month, meaning that sites using it would be unreachable outside of Europe during that time. This is probably peering related, but I'm not sure. Just tell site visitors to use ProtonVPN's free plan and connect to one of their VPN servers in the Netherlands if that happens.
While I recommend DDoS-Guard, I'll list some other alternatives in case something happens:
CloudFlare - Might be a honeypot, especially since I'm not sure how they'd be able to get away with this otherwise, but CloudFlare works for now. Just don't expect privacy from them. They're a US based company so they'll probably be reigned in eventually, but for now they're having their Wild West days. CloudFlare has a free plan. If CloudFlare is not configured properly when set up the real hosting provider will be leaked. More info about that here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
It's a myth that Cloudflare does not forward DMCA complaints, they forward everything. However, Cloudflare does not store any "sensitive data", which means forwarding "useless" information is similar like ignoring the DMCA request. A general advice is that whenever you use Cloudflare you should use a bulletproof backend server as well to avoid DMCA takedown request in the first place, so less or nothing gets forwarded (less "leakage risk").

OVPN's public IPv4 proxy (the Switzerland proxy) - Swedish company that provided a proxy for The Pirate Bay for a while, went to court because of it, and won. The two advantages with their Switzerland proxy in particular is that it's hosted by Interxion - the same Netherlands based company that is hosting Feral Hosting's DMCA ignored seedboxes - and that Switzerland is a pretty good jurisdiction. OVPN also scores well on That One Privacy Site. Accepts Bitcoin.
Before we go into registering a domain, I think it's worth considering if it's really worth keeping the name youtube-dl or if it could be spun off into a more accurate and less trademark infringing name like media-dl, for example. It downloads video and audio from a lot more sites than just YouTube, after all.
Resilient TLDs (there are more options than just these)
.is - As of a few years ago ISNIC had only ever suspended one domain and it was connected to ISIS.
When we asked whether ISNIC would follow Greenland’s lead and move for a proactive suspension, we got a clear answer.
“The short answer is no. Such an action would require a formal order from an Icelandic court. ISNIC is not responsible for a registrant’s usage of their domains,” ISNIC’s Marius Olafsson told TorrentFreak.
“This policy applies equally to any .is domain,” Olafsson says, adding that it’s the domain owner’s responsibility to abide by the law, not theirs.
“Domains can hardly be considered illegal any more than a street address. A street address is not illegal even if there is illegal activity in one apartment at the address,” ISNIC says.
.to - Used by a lot of torrent and other filesharing websites. I have never seen one get suspended.
.ru / .su - Good for anything that doesn't affect Russia or go against Russian interests.
.cr is a resilient TLD according to the International Intellectual Property Alliance's (IIAP) report: domain is still online despite actions against it from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica. Other notorious infringing sites are following the trend of using .cr domains as a safe haven (e.g., Costa Rica’s failure to deal effectively with its obligations regarding online infringement, more than eight years after they came into force under DR-CAFTA, is a serious concern.
In case you want cheaper options that are available on Njalla, .ch and .ws are said to be pretty good.
.ec is also looking pretty solid as Library Genesis (the world's largest book piracy website, which is under constant legal pressure from big US publishers) have been using it for some time without getting suspended.
Vulnerable TLDs
.com, .net, .cc, .tv, and .name are operated by VeriSign, a Washington DC based company that is controlled by the US government.
.org, .info, .asia, .aero, .ag, .bz, .gi, .hgn, .in, .lc, .me, .mobi, .mn, .sc and .vc are operated by Afilias, a company that blocked one of WikiLeaks' domains.
.site, .website, .tech, .online, .uno, .fun, .space, .store, and .press are operated by Radix, a company that has an anti-piracy partnership with the MPAA.
All TLDs operated by Donuts, a company that has an anti-piracy partnership with the MPAA.
Resilient domain registrars/resellers
Njalla - As anonymous as you can get when buying a domain. Njalla is a Nevis registered company that buys the more common domains from Canada based Tucows, which is pretty abuse friendly and some TLDs like .is they buy from the registry directly. They then lease it to you while legally speaking they own the domain. This means that you don't have to give them any personal information to register it and they take Monero. Njalla has a Tor Hidden Service, PGP key, and has support for registration via XMPP with OTR. Njalla is run by one of the Pirate Bay founders and they kept the Pirate Bay sense of humor alive when dealing with DMCA.
NiceVPS - As anonymous as you can get when buying a domain. NiceVPS is a domain reseller based in the Dominican Republic that buys the domain from easyDNS and then leases it to you, meaning that you don't have to provide any personal information since they own the domain on paper. Accepts Monero. Has a Tor Hidden Service, PGP key, and warrant canary. I've seen NiceVPS recommended on some websites, but I'm not sure how solid it is. Doesn't seem to offer all of the TLDs that Njalla, Openprovider, and easyDNS offer, including a lot of the more resilient ones.
Openprovider aka Hosting Concepts B.V. - Netherlands based registrar that is one of the most abused registrars by rogue pharma sites. Doesn't suspend domains without a WIPO decision or court order. Has a full section dedicated to it in the United States Trade Representative's 2019 report and a brief mention in the 2020 report.
easyDNS - Canada based registrar that has a big focus on due process. The current registrar of The Pirate Bay's .org domain, which it defended against the RIAA. Wouldn't suspend a domain for a video downloader like youtube-dl unless ordered by ICANN, CIRA, or a court according to their takedown policy. Accepts Bitcoin.
There are a few resellers of bulletproof Russian and Chinese registrars that accept cryptocurrency, but because those are pretty much only used by cyber criminals they would not be a good look for this project. And there's also the risk that they'll just be gone one day without a word and no way to transfer domain and not much recourse. Because of those reasons I'm omitting them from this list. I think the above mentioned registrars and resellers will be good enough, the project is legal after all.
Worth considering:
In order to anonymously directly register a domain at any of the other mentioned services than Njalla and NiceVPS you'd have to fake the WHOIS information, which violates ICANN's rules and registrars usually suspend domains because of that. I could especially imagine easyDNS doing this. Not sure how the other registrars would react to that, but ICANN does have the power to withdraw their accreditation - meaning that the registrars would lose the ability to issue domains - if they don't follow ICANN's rules. In the cases of Njalla and NiceVPS they aren't a registrar, they just fill in their own details and buy the domain for you from a registry/registrar when you register a domain using them.
If you use Njalla or NiceVPS you're handing over control of the domain to somebody else and have to take their word for it that you'll always have access to the domain. It's easier to trust Njalla than NiceVPS in this case since it's known who owns Njalla and they have more of a track record than NiceVPS, which is fairly unknown.
Let's Encrypt - Free, uses open source software, backed by EFF, Mozilla, and others. Easy to set up and easy to maintain with an auto-renewal script.
If you're using CloudFlare, you'll have to use their phony SSL certificate.
Keeping your server secure and other technical advice
Check your server, and how reliable it is in terms of security and privacy, online services like can test your server and it's configuration to ensure nothing is "leaking".
Check if someone can see your hidden backend server IP via In general you should block every IP connection to your backend server, only allow your own connection, VPN's or reverse proxies. You quickly can check if someone has an "open" backend IP service via services like
Source: CHEF-KOCH / Warez / Bulletproof
If you use CloudFlare, also check that your backend isn't leaking using CrimeFlare.
If you have set up email with your domain, use SMPT and a custom mail server so it doesn't leak your origin server IP. Email is the easiest way to leak origin server IP addresses.
Use SSH instead of VNC. With VNC the login information is sent unencrypted via plaintext, meaning that a rogue exit node in the Tor network and any server the login information is sent over on the clearnet could record your login information if they wanted to.
Use a password generator for all accounts and have it set to the max number of characters. Don't put the login information into a proprietary password manager or an online password manager. Make sure to back up the login information to multiple hard drives/SSDs/USBs/etc.
Try and make the site portable so that all software and all configurations can be saved to an ISO that can be spun up at any hosting provider at a moment's notice in case the site has to move at some point.
If you get a VPS, make sure it's KVM. KVM is much more secure than OpenVZ since OpenVZ doesn't have much separation between different customers on the same server. OpenVZ is also easy to oversell. Xen is also secure, but has worse performance than KVM.
Use nginx, it has a lot better performance than Apache.
Use MariaDB. It's a more up to date fork of MySQL developed by MySQL's original developer after he sold MySQL to Oracle. Contains bug fixes that sometimes have not gotten into MySQL yet. It is of course fully compatible with MySQL databases.
Basic security hardening (I'd probably use OSSEC + Shorewall instead of fail2ban and ufw, but I'm not an expert at this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
nginx SSL/TLS hardening
Let's Encrypt auto-renewal script
If you need FTP server software, Pure-FTPd is the most secure option. Use SFTP instead of FTPS for better security and less of a headache.
Disable password access for administration, require login using SSH key, and limit the number of login attempts.
Change default ports, like SSH. If anyone tries to access the default SSH port, have the firewall block them for a few hours.
Disable root login.
More security tips for SSH are available here. Don't implement port knocking though.
Disable nginx logging once everything is set up to protect user privacy and improve performance.
Keep the software up to date to decrease the risk of your serveVPS being hacked.
Don't use analytics. If you have to, self-host Matomo (formerly known as Piwik). It's open source.
Keep up to date backups of the site on multiple hard drives/SSDs/etc.
Anonymous payments
Bitcoin is fully traceable nowadays and tumbling/mixing your Bitcoin won't make any difference.
Tumblers are useless
Against my better judgement, I’m going with this click bait heading, but the premise is correct. Due to the software running real time analysis on the ledger, simply avoiding taint and breaking up coins is now entirely ineffective, as it matches the full bitcoin amount to be received over a period of time, as the software is built around a neural net of sorts (talking out of school here, I’m not a programmer) it appears to self-correct in real time as a more "likely" or "accurate" owner conclusion is reached.

Meanwhile Monero was the only cryptocurrency that that the US government couldn't track when they took down one of one of the biggest darknet drug markets and seized the site operator's cryptocurrencies. This is because Monero is the only major cryptocurrency properly designed to be private.
There has apparently been some recent developments when it comes to tracing Monero. You can read more about it in my comment on Reddit or Raddle. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage though.
Use I2P or Tor when transacting with cryptocurrency. I2P has some privacy benefits in its design over Tor:
Unidirectional tunnels instead of bidirectional circuits, doubling the number of nodes a peer has to compromise to get the same information. Protection against detecting client activity, even when an attacker is participating in the tunnel, as tunnels are used for more than simply passing end to end messages (e.g. netDb, tunnel management, tunnel testing) Tunnels in I2P are short lived, decreasing the number of samples that an attacker can use to mount an active attack with, unlike circuits in Tor, which are typically long lived. I2P APIs are designed specifically for anonymity and security, while SOCKS is designed for functionality.
However, I2P doesn't have as much funding and reseach or as big of a developer community behind it. I2P's userbase is also a lot smaller than Tor's. A full comparison about that can be found here. Monero chose I2P over Tor.
More information about Monero + I2P/Tor is available here.
Either get cryptocurrency donations or use a peer-to-peer exchange that doesn't enforce KYC (Know Your Customer) to buy Monero or Bitcoin. Unlike centralized exchanges, private sellers on decentralized exchanges won't automatically submit all their data to the government. Even if you get all of the cryptocurrency via donations and it therefore has no connection to your real identity at all you should still anonymize it via Monero so that it can't be traced from the donation wallet to the hosting provider which you want to keep hidden.
Some private sellers on peer-to-peer exchanges won't require IDs, while some might require it. If nothing is mentioned, it's worth asking the seller before you send them any money. A few even accept cash meetups and cash by mail (watch out for being scammed or mugged though). LocalCoinSwap, LocalCryptos, and LocalMonero even has sellers that accept gift cards (which you could buy with cash in a physical store). However, most gift cards are only redeemable in the country they were bought in, making this an option that won't work outside of the countries the sellers are based in. The one exception to this that I know of are Steam Wallet gift cards, which work internationally.
From what I've read there are some centralized exchanges that don't require KYC, but at least some of them freeze funds if they think it seems suspicious (which I would imagine a Tor IP would fall under) and they refuse to release the funds until they have been provided with an ID.
If you decide to buy cryptocurrency using a normal payment method, a wire transfer would be the option that involves the least amount of companies getting the transaction info, though I don't think you'd have much recourse with getting your money back if you got scammed and paid via wire transfer.
Bitcoin ATMs may require ID and usually have surveillance cameras around them, but this may vary depending on where you live.
If you bought Bitcoin, use to exchange it to Monero. If the service provider only accepts Bitcoin and not Monero, exchange the Monero back to Bitcoin so that the Bitcoin has been anonymized. Don't pay in Bitcoin without exchanging it to Monero and back first.
Prepaid cards usually require SMS verification and are sometimes limited to purchases within the country they were sold in, so be sure to read up on whatever card you're considering using. Vanilla Visa gift cards used to be the go to for VPN buyers back in the day since they only required putting a zip code into a website, but things change, so read up about activation requirements and international purchases for the card in your country before buying anything and if you get information from an unofficial source, try and make sure that it's at least somewhat recent. If SMS activation is required there are two options. One option is buying a push-button burner phone and a prepaid SIM card at a physical store using cash, activate it at a major public place and then once the prepaid card is activated shut off the phone and take out the SIM card and the battery. Another option is buying access to a dedicated number in the same country that you bought the card in at an online SMS inbox site using cryptocurrency (the free SMS inboxes that have shared phone number might be used up already). The catch 22 there is that you wouldn't have any cryptocurrency yet at this stage, so it's not really an option unless you figure something out that I wasn't able to think of. If the prepaid card can't do international purchases you could withdraw the money into an anonymously created PayPal account (requires SMS verification). Expect the prepaid card and PayPal account to almost certainly get frozen if you try to pay with it over Tor. The risk is lower when paying via a VPN IP, but it's still a notable risk, especially if it's a VPN server with lots of users and you can never verify that the VPN provider isn't logging you. An anonymously paid for self-hosted VPN on a dedicated IP address in the same country that you bought the prepaid card would be less likely to cause the card to get frozen. Just don't connect to that self-hosted VPN directly using your real IP address since your ISP would see that and since you would be the only user of that self-hosted VPN it would be directly identifying. You could use the prepaid card on public WiFi, but that will give out your general location and will give the WiFi network your IP address. It will also give the WiFi network your MAC address, so be sure to set the MAC address to be random (just search something like "[operating system] random mac address on wifi" on DuckDuckGo). Then there's the issue that most browsers other than Tor Browser, SecBrowser, and Bromite are bad combating browser fingerprinting. Sure you could also customize Firefox with arkenfox user.js (formerly known as ghacks-user.js) and a bunch of add-ons to combat all the different kinds of tracking, but you'll just make your browser more unique the more you modify it.
Anonymous Internet browsing
Use Tor when doing anything in connection with the site, including when using PuTTY and FileZilla. Verify the integrity of the Tor Browser installer using PGP before running it so that you know that it hasn't been tampered with. Use a bridge if you don't want your ISP/government to see that you're using Tor. Running Tor over a VPN may seem like a good idea, but even if the VPN provider really doesn't keep logs (which is impossible to verify) using Tor over VPN can make you easier to track since that makes the VPN service a permanent entry node [1][2][3][4] and there's also VPN fingerprinting. If Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is a concern you can use Pluggable Transports [1][2] to disguise the Tor traffic. Keep Tor Browser up to date. Never run Tor Browser in full screen. That makes you more easily trackable as websites can detect the real resolution of your screen. Don't install any add-ons or plugins, that makes you a lot easier to track. If you have logged in and then logged out of a site it can link you to other accounts you have on the same site using session cookies if you login to those accounts without hitting the "New Identity" button to relaunch Tor Browser with a clean slate. Block JavaScript when the website doesn't require it, that's the closest thing you'll come to an ad blocker. Use the Hidden Service version of sites when available, that way your Internet traffic never goes onto the clearnet and it also adds three more proxies between you and the site's server for a total of six proxies.
Since you shouldn't use an ad blocker with Tor Browser it's important that you keep your operating system up to date to minimize the risk of getting infected in case you come across some malicious JavaScript via for example malvertising when you have JavaScript activated.
If you use Windows and don't want to switch to Linux (even though you can set up dual boot or just boot it from a USB without even having to install it on your computer), use a non-admin user account and have an admin account that you only use to authorize trusted software to run, that will mitigate 94% of critical Windows vulnerabilities. You can use a tool like W10Privacy to decrease the amount of tracking in Windows 10, just be sure that the tool you use is updated to match the latest version of Windows 10 or you might brick your OS.
Use an end-to-end encrypted no logs email provider located outside of Five Eyes, Germany, Enemies of the Internet, and countries under surveillance - preferably ProtonMail - when signing up for all of those services. Use a different email address for anything not related to the administration of the website. ProtonMail has a Tor Hidden Service, but signing up for ProtonMail is only possible on the clearnet address, so you'd have to go into Tor Browser's privacy settings and change "Prioritize .onion sites when known" from "Always" to "Ask every time" when you register the ProtonMail account. Change it back to "always" once the registration is complete. And yes, it is possible to sign up for ProtonMail via Tor. It's not easy finding an exit node that hasn't gotten blocked yet, and you will most likely need a secondary anonymous email account on another email provider to send a verification code to, but it is possible. Don't try using a disposable email service, ProtonMail blocks pretty much all of them so you'll just waste time and will probably get your account frozen. Once you have made an account, go into Settings > Security and then wipe and disable the authentication logs. Once that's done - before you sign up for anything - log out and wait a while then log back in, just to see if their anti-fraud system decides to freeze your account or not.
If you go for a email provider other than ProtonMail, keep in mind that it has to be there for the long haul in order to be usable. If it suddenly shuts down without notice, you're pretty much shit out of luck. So try and go for one that has been around for a while and seems like it will continue to stick around.
Comparison of alternatives:
Use a new username that you haven't used before.
Use end-to-end encryption for all private communications. ProtonMail has built-in end-to-end encryption between ProtonMail accounts. If you want to encrypt email with PGP when communicating with non-ProtonMail users follow this guide. That will allow you to import it into ProtonMail. Just remember that the subject line will not be encrypted by PGP. PGP/MIME gives out less metadata than PGP inline and is just better in general, so use PGP/MIME. For file transfers you can also use OnionShare if the receipient also uses Tor Browser or put the file(s) into a password protected .7z file using 7-Zip with the "Encrypt file names" option enabled + a password generator set to the max number of characters that you then upload to Disroot Upload. Be aware that the lufi software that Disroot Upload runs on keeps the filename visible after the file has been deleted. If you need an end-to-end encrypted pastebin, self-host PrivateBin or use Disroot's PrivateBin. Disroot uses a privacy respecting hosting provider and claim that they don't keep logs for services that don't require an account, such as Disroot Upload and Disroot's PrivateBin.
Use DuckDuckGo instead of Google. At least when doing work related to the site. It has a Tor Hidden Service that you can easily find by searching "duckduckgo onion" or "duckduckgo hidden service" on DuckDuckGo.
Rely on open source software and privacy respecting services when it comes to processing and storing data related to the site., awesome-privacy, AlternativeTo, and GitHub makes it easy to find privacy respecting alternatives.
Keep software on your devices up to date to decrease the risk of it being compromised by an exploit.
And yeah, I probably went pretty deep on some of the less relevant sections, but I thought it was best to include everything.

2020.10.28 16:04 UpgradeTech After 10 years, here’s my (mostly complete) Fallout New Vegas music CD and record collection containing the songs from the game’s radio soundtrack from 1942 to 2009.

Hello all. With the 10-year anniversary of Fallout: New Vegas, I wanted to share with you a project I have been working on for the past couple of years. I have been trying to collect the music of the Fallout series on the original records as a way to bring the games to life.
I've been working on other similar video game record collections, however, the Fallout series has proven to be a combination of both fascinating and frustrating in tracking down the original versions of the songs used in the game which run the gamut from shellac 78s, vinyl LPs and 45s to enormous 16 inch transcription discs, radio broadcasts, re-recordings, Snader Telescriptions, 8 tracks, and stock music. New Vegas runs the gamut from 1942-2009 and every decade and music format in between.
For those of you impatient with this wall of text to see another wall of text, but with far more pictures mostly alphabetized by artist, here's the link where I try to document every single record used in Fallout: New Vegas' various main radio stations, Radio New Vegas, Black Mountain Radio, and Mojave Music Radio.
Important: Imgur may or many not prompt you to click on "Expand More Images"; the image album goes far beyond 10 pictures.
And of course we can't forget Mr. New Vegas aka Wayne Newton and perhaps his most famous single "Danke Schoen". Though some might say his voice is very different; many people confuse it with a woman's voice.

Breakdown by decade.

This is a continuation of my previous post on the 10 year anniversary of Fallout 3.
Compared the Fallout 3, finding the records for New Vegas was more difficult since many weren’t available as jukebox singles, only came on albums, were the wrong versions, or just more rare overall.
4 songs were re-recordings/obscure versions and very uncommon to find outside the game since radios do not use the more famous originals: “Heartaches by the Number”, “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie”, “Why Don’t You Do Right”, “Hangover Heart”. (Also an easy way to check if a Spotify or YouTube playlist compilation of the New Vegas soundtrack accurately uses the in-game versions) See also: “Jingle Jangle Jingle”.
New Vegas' soundtrack also tends to move forward in time with more records being first issued on the newly invented vinyl record instead of shellac 78s. More of them largely exist only on albums and weren't issued as singles.
Of course with albums comes cover art. While Fallout 3 had one song associated with a nudist film, a couple of pieces of album art for New Vegas feature a number of provocative poses even if it has nothing to do with the song itself, be warned that it is Sin City indeed.
Of course, people know the story of why Elvis was way too expensive to put in New Vegas. As for Rat Pack songs, there's one each for Sinatra and Dean Martin from their Capitol recording days. Sammy Davis Jr. would be a Decca records guy at the time (the label is much rarer to find in New Vegas compared to Fallout 3), but he is represented in the game as Tommy Torini.

  • "Jingle Jangle Jingle" was recorded for Columbia Records in 1942, the same year as "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition". However, Fallout 76 actually uses the 1962 version of the song made after Kay Kyser retired, made with former members of his orchestra for Capitol Records. Weirdly, there are a couple of videos on youtube with the New Vegas logo for "Jingle Jangle Jingle" with millions of views that are using the wrong version of the song. It's not the in-game Columbia Records version, but taken from the same 1962 Capitol Records album that Fallout 76 uses. Though it hasn't been picked up by youtube's copyright ContentID program compared to the in-game version.
  • "Stars of the Midnight Range" is another one of those darn 16 inch transcription discs. Imagine taking a record and enlarging it to the size of your car hubcap. Like Fallout 3's Bob Crosby songs, you need a turntable that can actually accommodate the increased size. Standard turntables will cause the record to overlap the tonearm itself. According to his autobiography, Johnny Bond recorded it in 1944. The same Soundies Inc. CD album reissue also provided "Headin' Down the Wrong Highway" used in Fallout 76 which is the only other "new" Soundies transcription song used after the dissolution of the archiving company after the death of the archivist.
  • "It's a Sin" is the only RCA Victor song in New Vegas, similar to "Anything Goes" from Fallout 3. Eddy Arnold recorded it in 1946. It would take until Fallout 4 to more RCA Victor song to appear in Fallout. Probably unsurprisingly, there are quite a few songs that talk about sin in New Vegas.
  • "Mad About the Boy" is another 16 inch transcription disc song. Helen Forrest recorded this Noel Coward standard in the 1949-1950 period with the rather impressively-named Carmen Dragon and his orchestra. Fallout being Fallout means that this transcription disc uses vertical grooves (up and down) instead of the more common lateral grooves (side to side). If you look very closely at the huge record sleeve, there are enormous letters that say "VERTICAL". In the days before stereo sound, the idea was that since transcription disc turntables used rubber idler wheels that horizontally rub to rotate the platter, this imparts noise in the playback since the needle also moves horizontally. Therefore the grooves should undulate up and down to avoid excess noise to get good mono playback. When stereo sound was perfected a decade or so later, grooves would move the needle up-down and left-right to get two discrete stereo channels. As such, since my cartridge is meant for lateral discs, I can't actually play this disc until I find a stereo cartridge for the tonearm, Fallout being Fallout.

  • "Orange Colored Sky" doesn't actually appear in-game, though it was prominently used in a 2010 TV trailer for New Vegas. It sort of languished in obscurity with the other Fallout trailer song "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" until they finally made it into a Fallout game with 2015's Fallout 4. It was recorded by Nat King Cole in 1950 for Capitol Records. New Vegas would actually be the first in the series to start to use Capitol Records songs.
This is also the last shellac 78 used for New Vegas before the soundtrack transitions into the newer vinyl era.
By the way there is an interesting Nat King Cole song that encapsulates the Fallout soundtrack called "Mr. Cole Won't Rock and Roll". It doesn't appear on the original 1966 release of the album Live at the Sands released after his death in 1965, but it does on the CD reissue.

  • "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" is also pretty iconic and was featured in the film Ocean's 11 in 1960. Unusually for a Dean Martin Capitol Records 45, this is rather hard to find. It apparently failed to chart despite being in the movie. Probably because it didn't do too well, the budget compilation album company Pickwick reissued the song a lot on so-called "Greatest Hits" albums. The 1957 Pickwick album You Can't Love 'Em All is probably the earliest reissue and one of the most common. Though the end credits still credit Capitol Records for the song so they likely still retain the rights.
  • "Blue Moon" is the only other Rat Pack song in New Vegas, this time by Frank Sinatra himself. It was taken from the 1961 Capitol Records album Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!! and doesn't appear to have been issued as a single though there are some obscure EP versions that cut down the album. This was his third to last studio album for Capitol Records, though it is a partial re-make of an album he had made previously for Columbia Records ten years ago when he was still a bobby-soxer heartthrob. By 1960, Sinatra would be rather preoccupied with launching his own record label, Reprise. Of course it didn't stop Capitol from releasing a number of compilation albums after his departure from the label.
  • "Happy Times" is another Bert Weedon guitar instrumental. It was originally titled "China Doll" and released in on HMV (His Master's Voice) records in 1961. People of a certain age from the UK may recall when 45s came with knock-out centres lest they suffer from the record dinker tool to force them to fit in a jukebox.

Meanwhile, director Ridley Scott was riding on a wave of fame after the release of Alien in 1979. To keep up his directing chops, he made a series of commercials for Chanel No. 5, the perfume. The first was the radically different Blue Sky commercial with a woman lounging by a pool with the tagline “Share the Fantasy”.
The second came out in 1982, known officially as “L'invitation au rêve - Le jardin”.
There are several different versions with dialog, but they all feature the same images of the mysterious woman and man and personal questions.
The curious thing about the commercial is that it uses the re-recording of “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” from this very same album. The commercial garnered a feature in the December 14, 1982 issue of the New York Times, but it does not mention the discrepancy in the recordings. The recording proved so popular in France that it led to a reissue of the album in 1983 with a new cover evoking scenes from the commercial spot and sprinkling of piano present in the commercial, but not in the original 1979 album.
Later the same year in 1982, Ridley Scott would complete Blade Runner which featured similar imagery from the commercial and another Ink Spots song in the original trailer "If I Didn't Care". This was cut from the theatrical release and replaced with the soundalike "One More Kiss, Dear". The original Ink Spots tune is restored depending on which version of the movie you have.
For "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie", it's arguably one of Billy Kenny's last recordings before he died in 1978.
Again, you have to be careful with buying the Ink Spots on vinyl LPs. After the Ink Spots broke up, many impostor groups rand around recording under the Ink Spots name even if they didn't have any original members. At best for Ink Spots LPs you can have mono or fake stereo, but original recordings, the worst will have entirely new re-recordings with no original members. Most of the Ink Spots repertoire was originally recorded on mono shellac 78s and a couple of the songs used in Fallout never made the jump to vinyl. If you want to find vinyl compilation albums with the original versions you know and love from the games, try to find labels and the subsidiaries which hold the original rights like Decca, MCA, and Brunswick to reduce the chance of them being re-recordings.
Of course for "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie", it is taken from an album of re-recordings though with Bill Kenny as the original member. I've been able to confirm the following issues as having the New Vegas version of the song though it could be there are others especially on compilations with other artists. While all of the other Ink Spots songs used in Fallout are licensed from Decca/Geffen Records, the New Vegas end credits for this song mention a Dominion Entertainment which appears to be a K-Tel subsidiary which also provided the other oddball New Vegas song "Heartaches by the Number". I'm not sure how Spotify would categorize this.
  1. The Ink Spots originally recorded "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" for Decca Records in 1941, but New Vegas does not use this version of the song.
  2. Bill Kenny did record "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" for Mercury Records in 1962 for the album Bill Kenny Sings the Golden Hits of the Ink Spots, but this is a different version.
  3. If I Didn't Care (1979) is the first known issue of the New Vegas version of the song. It had a couple of issues in 1979 under the Columbia subsidiaries of CBS/51 West Records. Unfortunately, it's a rather vague title featuring the Ink Spots' best-selling song, muddling searches quite a bit. It features a fountain pen, an ink bottle and a rose on the cover. Depending on which format you find the album, it may or may not actually mention if it's re-recordings. The LP says it's full of "previously released material", but I have not managed to find an earlier issue of these recordings. The cover and the label mention a certain "Springboard International" and "Koala Record Company".
Here is the 8-track issue of the song in the most 70s way I can think of, with a space age Weltron and a lava lamp. Around the middle you get the dreaded fade-out and fade-in that people of a certain age may remember about the quirks of the 8-track format.
  1. Ink Spots Greatest Hits (1982) again has a rather vague title, but it was made by Era Records. I don't know why the cover art features a woman in a suggestive pose covered in stars if none of the titles reference this. I guess it was the 80s. The cover does mention that it's re-recordings by "Key Seven Music" and "Dominion Music Corporation".
  2. The World on Fire (I Don't Want to Set...) (1983) Again, the title is rather vague, but this is an unusual French issue under Carrere/Media Plus. The cover art features imagery from the Chanel No. 5 perfume commercial as mentioned above with the man and the tower looking on a man and a woman enjoying a chance meeting. The text boxes reference this with "Musique originale du spot TV" (Original music from the TV commercial) and "Nouveaux enregistrements" (New recordings). There also was a lead single 45 with the same cover art, but it only has the version of "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" from the commercial and "We Three (My Echo My Shadow and Me)". The cover mentions "Kilo Music Limited" and "Key Seven Music".
My copy actually appears to be signed by Harold Winley, Jim Nabbie, Sony Hatchett, and King Drake aka the Jim Nabbie's Ink Spots. There's an interesting article from the August 1, 1985 issue of South Florida Sun Sentinel about the Jim Nabbie's Ink Spots suing other Ink Spots groups for using the Ink Spots name. Whatever the case, they were not present at the original 1941 recording sessions for "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie", nor does it appear that Bill Kenny sang with the group at the 1978 recording session. Apparently they were based around the Florida area and I'd love to know the circumstances that led them to signing an Ink Spots record pressed in France.
One more note on this song: I haven't been able to find much about the recording of the album. There is some information about the album having being made in Nashville in some newspaper articles for the Vancouver Sun in 1982-1983 by Denny Boyd. It was brought forth by Bill Kenny's widow Audrey McBurney who apparently tried to sue the Chanel No. 5 perfume corporation for unauthorized use of the song from the album. Other newspaper articles from 1985-1992 either misidentify or correctly identify the version of the song used in the commercial.
Presumably there would be more information about the album in the court case if it still exists. I've tried to visit a couple of legal libraries over the years, but Canadian court cases and appeals are hard to get this side of the border and since it took place around 1982, it is before the 1985 digitization limit. The case was possibly dropped and settled out of court, but if there are any Canadian Fallout fans who have access to the legal archives in Vancouver, I'd greatly appreciate any help in this matter on Bill Kenny's last album.

The New Vegas version was recorded in 1980 for K-Tel Records in Nashville. The end credits of New Vegas for the song do not mention Columbia Records, the original label, like they do for "Big Iron" and "Jingle Jangle Jingle". Instead it's "Dominion Entertainment" again like for "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie". Dominion Entertainment also appears appears to be a K-Tel subsidiary I'm not sure how Spotify would categorize this.
Candlelite Records provided the earliest issue of the New Vegas version that I could find. There appears to have been an acquisition/lawsuit/bankruptcy between Candlelite and K-Tel in 1980 and 1984. However, they were multiple Candlelite compilations issued in 1983 which have the New Vegas version.
  1. The Top 100 Country Hits of All Time (1983) This is a long 5 LP set (or 3 8-track) Candlelite set. The minuscule asterisks mention this version of the song is a re-recording by the original artist provided by "Imperial Music".
  2. The 1950's Rock and Roll Music Collection - Looking Back (1983) This is part of a colorful Candlelite series, this one is yellow and features a woman precariously rocking back at a bowling alley. It's a 3 LP set with a large booklet featuring random 1950s trivia. The album mentions a random mix of original and re-recordings by the original artist, some provided by "Imperial Music".
  3. Country Music Cavalcade - Nashville Graffiti (1983) 3 LPs. This is a confusing issue for Candlelite Records. First, there is a nearly identical 1976 version of Nashville Graffiti which uses the CBS/Columbia Records version aka the original recording not used in New Vegas. Cavalcade is also a series with nearly identical covers which have different bylines like "Welcome to Candlelite Country" while emphasis should be placed on the Nashville Graffiti byline for the New Vegas version. The cover is a scribbly one-line type drawing with a man and woman singing next to a jukebox and a car near a diner. It mentions re-recordings from "Key Seven Music".
  4. Heat of the 50s (1987) This is a cassette released by Master Sound a subsidiary of the Mastertronic video game company from the UK. There's a long story about this release, but the intriguing thing is that it also has the version of "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" from New Vegas as well which is extremely unusual. The cover features black and white clipart of a man dancing? The tape does mention re-recordings from "Kilo Music Limited".
  5. Those Fabulous 50s (1988) Another UK release from Ocean Records. The lamination is unfortunately peeling off from the cover which features a large closeup of a car. The label does mention re-recordings from "Kilo Music Limited".
  6. Hooked on Country (1990) Another UK release, this time a true-blue K-Tel record instead of one of its subsidiaries. It's a gatefold for a single LP with 50 non-stop country classics. Because it's non-stop, it's mostly one giant groove with no track separations, so cuing is a little difficult. The track credits are a bit of a mess with some tracks being re-recorded and some not. "Heartaches" is credited to a "S J Productions Inc." You can actually hear the New Vegas version of "Heartaches on this very old K-Tel TV commercial for the album.
There are likely other issues, but these are the ones I found so far with the New Vegas version. I also have a large number of "duds" from various countries which do not have the version featured in Fallout.
This is the last track used in New Vegas that was originally issued on vinyl before the soundtrack moves forward into the newer CD era.

Much of this information comes from the physical CDs themselves and their liner notes booklets. Surprisingly, the original CDs were among the hardest things to track down for New Vegas. Some people assume these songs were composed specifically for New Vegas mostly because they don't seem to exist outside of New Vegas. But these were songs composed by many talented musicians who are still working today. I will try to list instances where the song also appeared in media earlier than New Vegas.
You may recognize the other Dick Walter tracks on the Pure Big Band KPM CD set. "Hey, Hot Lips!" was used on the UK version of Whose Line is It Anyway? for the Narrate scenes back in the 1990s. The US version uses a slightly less sleazy version for its narrate scenes. "Hot Liquorice" was also used in 1998 X-Files "Triangle" episode and the Boggart scene coming from the gramophone Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Here we are firmly in the CD era and some of Fallout's most modern songs. Some of these CDs would be issued on cardboard digipaks instead of plastic jewel cases.

Like all Fallout games, trying to track down the original releases and information about the songs in New Vegas was simultaneously interesting, rewarding, surprising, and very frustrating since so little information seems to exist about many of the songs outside of the game and the wide range of formats from shellac to vinyl to transcription discs to reel to reel tape to 8-tracks to cassettes to CDs. And yet after 10 years on the anniversary, it is still incomplete and I'm still looking.

2020.10.27 22:51 QueenRowana Dutch Students share their worries about the future. Depressing as heck.

So in this article from a decent middle ground-ish newspaper in The Netherlands, students share their fears and concerns for their future. My country very strongly blames young people and students for the second wave we're in right now. These stories by students are simply depressing. Things cant go on like this.
I'm not gonna translate the whole thing word for word-accurate but grab some main things.
Rough translation:
Rijk (21) Says:
Young people need to make themselves heard, not just whining and complaining. Take action. What makes it extra hard for us is that they make it seem like we're not being responsible, but that's not all of us. My social life is minimal. I live alone and study online. Teachers try, but you cant make online class interesting. I want to discuss the material and talk on after class. I think I'm missing out on knowledge. If feels like things are on standby. I'm lucky that i'm still studying. I couldnt imagine Having to find a job right now. Economic consequences will be great and I'm worried about that. As an Arts student i was already worried about that, but now its worse.
Rivka (17) says:
I dream about failing my studies. I was looking forward to studying. I'm worried that when if finish my internship i wont be capable enough because it is all so limited.
Marya (20) says:
I was trying to find my own place to live and was looking for a job at restaurants. All that ended. I have no social contacts, no income, studying is hard. It requires a lot of discipline to study online. I do not have that discipline. I feel like I'm learning a lot less. I have no idea whether i will learn enough to be able to practically work in my field. My adult life is delayed. This is a very stressful period for me.
Amine (26) says:
Everything i put every last minute of free time into for years is gone. I ran an events company next to my studies and invested all my time and resources in it. My company almost doesnt exist anymore. I have so many questions: how long will this take? Will i be able to keep studying? Do i just keep hoping things will work out somehow? I have a lot of fear and stress. It shows itself in eating and sleeping badly. I am irritated where before i was always joking. It is very depressing that I was working so hard on my future and now it no longer exists. I hardly go outside. I want to stay in bed all day. It's ridiculous that they point to young people to place blame. You cant generalize like that. it only polarizes us.
Lena (23) says:
I am good at minimizing things, other people always have it worse than I do, and that way i stay positive. But I'm struggling because i go outside so little. I live on my own and couldnt visit my parents because they are vulnerable. I have only one our of physical school a week. In the short term I'm not very worried. I took some time during lockdown to find out information and sing up for extra classes that i otherwise would never have done. But if this continues i could have problems. I need to do a report for my minor, and that is very hard in corona-times. So i went to protest at the Museumplein last month, to show that i want changes.
Levi (20) says:
I'm on the board of my student union. That should bring people together. I'm 20, this should be the best year of my study, but it isn't. I get that it cant be helped. But it's a shame. I don't meet new people, especially now that everything closes at 10pm. I was thinking about getting on a dating app, but I'd rather meet someone irl. Studying is harder too. Normally I would ask questions after class, but that is harder. Concentrating is harder too. Even though I'm a positive person.
Sara (21) says:
I was supposed to be studying abroad. Going to the UK to meet new people in a new place. It almost feels like i'm just biding my time. If all goes well i'll get my Bachelors this year. I was planning to begin a Masters after this. But now i might take a gap year. I notice I'm rethinking a lot of my choices. Although i'm not sure if I'll be able to travel during a gap year. How, when Where? no one can tell me. Socially I'm doing alright. I live with my boyfriend and some housemates. But I see very little of my friends. A huge contrast to before when i often went for drinks.
Sohpie (19) says:
i used to go clubbing every week. I try to stay positive, this is a hard time for everyone. But I'm worried about how long this is gonna take. I'm doing an internship at a hotel and have seen the consequences. i hope to find a job in the tourist industry. When I started studying i thought there would always be work in tourism, but now i worry about getting a job. Next year i finish studying, i hope things will be better then, but who knows. It doesnt help that i cant even go partying anymore. I find it very weird that people blame us young people for the crisis. We cannot go out and many people like me adhere to that. I wonder if clubs and bars will survive the crisis. Will we be able to go out after corona?
Sjoerd (21) says:
You cant put all the blame on us. I was able to do fun things the last two years of my study. I pity the firstyears. They say your study time is the best of your life. That's different now, it's not nice at all. I lost my job in the service industry. I feel like it is taboo for students to complain or show resistance now. We are told to stop whining so much. As though we are less important. Yes we played a part in the spread. But you cant just blame us.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Hoping to keep it to $500-$600.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Next few weeks. I will likely hold out for some Black Friday sales.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Have a case, peripherals (mouse, keyboard), OS, and monitors.
Should just need all the guts: MoBo, processor, GPU, ram, probably a new power supply, and an HDD.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US, no microcenter within a thousand miles.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Case is a Cooler Master Elite 311 ( Nothing else inside is worth saving.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I'm open to it if it's on the scale of set it and forget it. I won't be regularly monitoring it.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
SSD if I can afford it in the budget, but going for more power now and buying it later is also an option.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Orbi mesh network, either wireless or hard-wired into one of the... Whatever they are called. Are they routers? One of the Orbi box thingies.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I have a case.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No, I have a Win10 license

2020.10.21 13:18 Ahrily Happy Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) everyone!

Today marks the start of the Amsterdam Dance Event, the world's biggest and most successful electronic music festival. At least, it would've been this week - but obviously due to the pandemic all physical events are cancelled.
Sucks, because this year would've been the biggest and most comprehensive edition to date, because the festival is 25 years old!
I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a big online programme, with new events through online streams, but old footage from archives too. You can find the entire event list here!
Happy ADE everyone! Hopefully next year we can dance this city to exhaustion again :)

"Once after all my plans got canceled, spending a Friday night at home, I realized that I needed that significant person in my life. Online dating wasn't a thing for me, but I decided to give it a chance. In less than one week of scrolling pages after pages, I saw a really charming Korean lady. It was Chung-Ae, a girl from an online dating website. Now, she is my love, the mother of our kids, and the dearest person in my life."

2020.10.12 22:27 investing-scientist2 FastInvest scores only 2.78 out of 5.0 in my meta-review

Today I looked for FastInvest reviews published or updated withing the last six months. I was only interested in those of them that gave a final score (it was always a system of five stars, with five meaning highest score). I also looked for opinions at portals, such as Trustpilot. With that I calculated an overall score for FastInvest, which turned out to be as low as 2.78 out of 5.0. Below, I'm showing details for that simple calculation, plus some basic data about this P2P lending platform.
Overall, I'm absolutely NOT recommending putting your money into this platform.

FastInvest: key facts

Methodology and Results
I was looking for sources of data by googling "Fastinvest review", "Fastinvest Erfahrungen" etc. I did the search in English, German, Spanish and Italian. From a list of found reviews I only kept those published or updated in the last six months and providing an overall score for the platform. In this way I got five reviews and scores from three portals with people's opinions. Here are the details.

  1. P2P Empire (
  1. Jean Galea (

  1. Marco Schwartz (

  1. P2P Lending Sites (

  1. P2P Platforms (
Based on those reviews, mean overall score is 2.95.

Opinions from portals

  1. Trustpilot (
Mean score 2.6 based on 806 votes.
Worth noting, plenty of people express their doubts about FastInvest credibility, mostly because of delayed withdrawals (orders dating back April-May or so) and some guys claim FastInvest is a scam.
  1. Sitejabber (
Score of 3.0 based on 1 review.
  1. Google Reviews (,1,,,)
Score of 2.5, based on 31 reviews.

Weighted average (accounting for the number of people who voted in each poll): (2.6 * 806 + 3.0 * 1 + 2.5 * 31) / (806 + 1 + 31) = 2.6
The final FastInvest Score is a mean value of “mean overall score” from reviews and “weighted average” from portals:

FastInvest Score = 2.78

Complementary information

Social media
FastInvest communicates with its customers and others through their blog (, however there have been no posts for two months now. They also have some social media accounts, including Twitter (, where last tweet dates back to June...
Contact with customers
FastInvest extremely rarely communicates with its customers. There are no updates on the current condition of the platform, their strategy to fight COVID-related crisis and no updates on loan originators.
Four days ago I received a messade that my KYC document (passport photo) ws rejected. Worth noting, I submitted the documents a couple of months ago. And exactly the same photo of passport was accepted by all other P2P platforms in my portfolio. in my opinion, this is just a play to delay any withdrawals.

Do I invest with Fastinvest?
Unfortunately, FastInvest is part of my P2P lending portfolio.
